History
of the Larrakia Nation
Larrakia
is the language group name for the aboriginal people of Darwin,
in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Traditionally Larrakia
lands included the Cox Peninsula, most of Gunn Pt and much of
rural Darwin. Darwin Harbour is also recognised as being within,
Larrakia country. Larrakia people are often referred to as "saltwater
people", although our boundaries extend up to approx. 50km
inland. The Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation (LNAC) was
established in 1997. This was a proactive step, by key Larrakia
people, in forming an umbrella organisation for members of the
larger Larrakia family groups. The Northern Land Council was instrumental
in this process. At this time, January 2001, LNAC represents seven
Larrakia family groups. The seven larger groups are composed of
numerous interrelated individual families. We are considered the
peak representative body for any issues regarding Larrakia people.
We are regularly consulted on various local developments, such
as, Native Title & Land Claim negotiations, Health & Community
services, School talks, etc. In general we facilitate distribution
of all relevant correspondence for our members, including employment
& training opportunities. Our "Governing Committee"
meets monthly to ensure there is appropriate consultation amongst
the family groups - http://www.larrakia.com/
